On Friday, April 20th, HCI hosted the New Mother’s Workshop in the Amanful community. Claudius Thompson, country director, came up with the idea for this workshop while installing mosquito nets in homes and observing a mother pick up her child incorrectly. The workshop was held under a tent right in the community, and three women from the Ghana Health Services came to present. About 58 women registered and attended, which was very exciting since HCI only expected to speak with 20-30. The workshop lasted roughly two hours and covered topics mostly surrounding health, hygiene, and handling of newborns and young children. The resource women were very engaging and informative, and the mothers were attentive, and participated in discussion. Following the workshop, HCI gave away several mosquito nets, and handed out food and bags of baby products such as diapers, soap, and food supplements. HCI is very pleased with how the event turned out, and hopes to begin hosting multiple of these events annually.
